چکیده

Understanding the processes that contribute to tropical cyclone (TC) formation, intensity and structure changes is essential for improving the predictability of TCs. Previous studies have focused mostly on the lowto mid-level processes leading to TC formation and rapid intensity and structure changes. The influence of upper-level atmospheric processes, especially the evolution of the outflow layer has not received much attention until recently. Therefore, the long-term goal of the proposed work is to improve our understanding and prediction of the tropical cyclone outflow layer, its evolution, and relation to tropical cyclone (TC) formation and intensity and structure changes.

Tropical Cyclone Intensity and Structure Changes in relation to Tropical Cyclone Outflow

The overarching objective of this project is to identify impacts to tropical cyclone structure and intensity throughout the tropical cyclone lifetime. A common factor is the impact of midand upperlevel environmental conditions that affects formation and intensification of a tropical cyclone. It is hypothesized that during the formation process, the environmental interaction has maximum impact o...

The Properties of Convective Clouds over the Western Pacific and Their Relationship to the Environment of Tropical Cyclones

Using data obtained from the western Pacific region during “Tropical Cyclone Structure 2008” (TCS08), ONR’s field program, this study proposes to investigate large-scale environmental conditions, mesoscale phenomena, and small-scale convective bursts, as well as their interactions that are responsible for TC formation and intensity changes. Specific objectives include 1) characterizing the inte...

Dynamical Control of Rapid Tropical Cyclone Intensification by Environmental Shears

Improve our understanding of the physical processes by which (a) 3-D environmental shears, in particular the low-level meridional shear and upper-level vertical shear affect inner core structure and intensity, and (b) the mesoscale vortices, outer spiral rainbands, inner spiral rainbands, and the eyewall interact and affect TC development and intensity change. General questions to be addressed ...

Tropical cyclone Tracy – numerical guidance then and now

The passing of over three decades since tropical cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin on Christmas Day 1974 provided a reason to reflect upon the progress of numerical weather prediction over that period. Each decade was characterised by major model changes. In Australia, the 1970s saw the operational implementation of a 7-level baroclinic filtered model at a grid spacing of 254 km, with rudimentary...

Analysis and High-Resolution Modeling of Tropical Cyclogenesis During the TCS-08 and TPARC Field Campaign

The long-term goal of this project is to improve the prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis, structure and intensity changes through improved understanding of the fundamental mechanisms involved. The accurate prediction of TC genesis, structure and intensity changes is critical to Navy missions and civilian activities in coastal areas. Significant gains have been made in the TC track predi...
